Go specific.
Then go sideways.
A good uncommon answer isn’t a random obscure fact. It is an accurate answer found from a different angle. Here’s a routine you can actually use under a clock.
Start: guitar. Be specific: mandolin. Go sideways: a bowed string instrument from another tradition, such as erhu. Each step changes the search space. None guarantees a particular official score.
Keep a safe answer in your pocket.
Read the whole prompt before searching for something obscure. “A country in Africa” and “a landlocked country in Africa” are different tasks. Find one answer you are certain fits. You can fall back to it if the clock gets tight.
Go specific.
Replace a broad idea with an exact member of the category. For a musical instrument, think beyond “guitar” to an instrument you have heard in a particular musical tradition. Specific does not mean adding adjectives: a made-up “tiny blue guitar” is not a new instrument.
Then go sideways.
Change the shelf you are searching on. For a country, move to a different region. For a sport, move from stadiums to winter events. For a writer, change century or language. This often works better than staring harder at your first idea.
Check the boundary one more time.
Before submitting, test the exact wording. A city is not a country; a retired club name may not count if the question says current; a team nickname may be ambiguous. Prefer the full, unambiguous name when you can type it in time.
Spend the clock on a decision.
Try roughly five seconds to understand the category, ten to explore another angle, and the rest to choose and type. This is a practice routine, not a scoring formula. Speed alone does not increase the preset points in Divedle.
Learn one useful thing from the result.
After each round, review a missed category and remember one accurate example. Do not memorize our tier placements as official scores: this practice bank uses editorial tiers, and the official game curates its own answers.
Understand the scoring you’re playing.
In Divedle, all six tiers are assigned in advance for practice. In the official game, answer sets and rarity are curated. The top-tier answer also considers how satisfying it is to find, according to the official FAQ. A clever-sounding answer does not come with a guaranteed score.
